How to deal with the encounters while cycling

Encounter with the attack of dogs is one of the most frightening things for a cyclist, it’s inevitable but you can handle with it tactfully with the knowledge of how does the dog think.

First, you need to know a dog’s nature.

Most dogs chase the cyclist with the aim of defending for his/her dominion. When passed by a stranger in the street, the dog only think you as a trespasser who is going to rob his territory.

But if you meethim/her at an open area, like the big square, fields, he will be not interested in you. On the contrary he may shun from you for the fear of being attacked by you.

Second, you should understand a dog’s tactics.

Dogs usually will attack you from a distant shelter. Then he/she will bark at you or combat against you from the back of you. Even if he/she in on the front of you,he/she will attack you after you pass him/her. You can take advantage of thisto prevent the attack in advance.

      Speeding

You can cycle fast to avoid a dog’s attack. He/she would rather sleep than to attack you. You can tell whether he/she has the intention to attack you. You should not be worriedif he/she is just dogtrotting, barking at you , with ears and tail upright, becausehe/she is pretending. Don’t worry about it. But dude, you should get serious if he/she is running wildly and showing his/her teeth. At that time, recalling his/herstrategy will benefit you a lot. If the slope is wide and down-angled, you should just ride away from him/her.

      Protecting the front wheel

If he/she go attack your wheel directly, you may fall off your bike, then will leave yourself to danger. So be careful to protect your wheel.

Shouting and pretending to picking up a rock.

Most dogs can sense the human’s feeling. When you are angry with them, they will know it. If you shout ‘stop, get away’ etc. to them they can understand it. But if it does notwork, you can pretend you have a rock in your hand and intend to throw at them. They may feel the danger and leave.

      Using water

If a big dog is watching at you and blocking your way, what’s worse the road is so narrow. There’s no chance to run away from him/her. Then take off your water bottle. Sometimes you can discourage them merely by showing the act of getting the bottle. But if not,you can spray water at his/her face and shout. He/she may slow down. Sometimes he /she may keep chasing. Then don’t stop riding and keep going so as to leave quickly.

Giving up and getting off the bike

If all the strategies above don’t work. You should get off the bike quickly and put the bike in the middle of you and the dog, then ask help from others.

If you meet a dog when cycling, he/she may bark at you and keep running after you, even bite your luggage. Remember not to be panic at that time, slow down or just get off to walk. You’ll be Ok after your walk out of his/her territory. If you choose to ride wildly, you will just make it worse—he/she may chase after you for the next few miles.

If you meet him/her at night, you can shine him/her with flashlight.

But all I said does not work for the rabid dog. If you meet a dog who is down in the dumps and sticking out his/her tongue, the only thing you can do is run.

If you are bitten by a dog unfortunately, goto the hospital as soon as you can to take the rabies vaccine

Dogs sometimes can be a trouble when you are cycling. But please remember not to hurt them. They are human’s friends!
